ALBERT PARK YACHT CLUB
WinterSail 2010
Albert Park Yacht Club again hosted Wintersail , a 3 day coaching Regatta for the juniors in Sabots, Minnows, Laser 4.7s, Cadets and Optimists. It is aimed at the bottom to middle of fleet sailors although all are catered for. A fleet of 37 boats with 54 sailors attended this years event. The order of the day for Friday was as much on water time as possible because of the 50 knot winds forecast for the Saturday. Light northerlies ensured a build up of confidence, and camaraderie with fellow sailors and coaches. Saturday brought a little apprehension as the bureau’s gale warning was still current for Port Philip. However the lake is sheltered somewhat by the city buildings and all sailors took to the water and enjoyed the occasional gusts of 20 knots. The day finished with a sausage sizzle and all went home satisfied. Sunday saw practice starts culminating in 3 short races in the afternoon. Yachting Vic CEO Ross Kilborn had a chat at lunch time and found the sailors very responsive and all having a fantastic time. Thanks to the generosity of Zhik, Ronstan and The BoatShed, every sailor left with a well deserved reward. Head coach Micah Shuwalow, ably assisted by 6 class coaches, provided a valuable experience to all who took part.
